How I installed TomTom Navigator 6 on my HTC Touch Diamond from a Mini SD card

Having purchased TomTom Navigator 6 on Mini SD card, I soon discovered that installing it to my HTC Touch Diamond was not as easy as expected. However, thanks to a fair degree of computer savvy - and a bit of Web surfing, I finally managed to get it working. I'd like to share this with anyone else who finds themselves in the same position.

I hope this helps you.

Firstly, the HTC Touch Diamond does not have a storage card slot; its storage is all internal. I think this is why this whole process is so complicated. So, step 1 is...

Step 1

Using File Explorer, I created a new folder on the HTC called "TomTom Install". This was created at the root of the Internal Storage.

Step 2

With the HTC attached to my PC via USB and a card reader, also attached to my PC via USB, I copied the entire contents of the TomTom Mini SD card to the folder I created in step 1 (i.e. "Internal Storage\TomTom Install" folder)

Step 3

On the HTC, I navigated (using File Explorer) to the "Internal Storage\TomTom Install\2577" folder and ran (clicked on) the "ttn.cab" file. This installed the Navigator 6 application on the HTC.

Problem: When I ran TomTom Navigator, it told me "No Maps Found". I fixed this with the following step...

Step 4

I copied the map folder (in my case this was called "UK_and_IE_plus_major_roads_of_WE" but you may have different maps) from "Internal Storage\TomTom Install" folder to the root of the Internal Storage.

Step 5

Next, Navigator told me I must activate the map. In the box with my Mini SD card I found a small plastic card with the activation code on it. I selected "Automatic" activation and entered this code when asked. This activated the map.

Step 6

Navigator now asked me to "Select Your GPS Receiver". I scrolled through and selected "Other NMEA GPS". I then selected a Baud rate of 4800 and COM port 4.

Problem: I thought I was up and running but I discovered that there were no voices. This was solved by the following step...

Step 7

I copied the contents of "Internal Storage\TomTom Install\Voices" to "My Device\Program Files\Navigator\Voices" (this folder was already there but didn't have the voice files in). I then restarted Navigator on the HTC and went into "Change Preferences | Change Voice" and was able to select a voice.

Problem: All appeared to be fine but then I noticed (it was pointed out to me actually!) that the postcode search was only allowing me to search on the first half of the postcode. This was easily solved by the following step...

Step 8

I copied the folder (including its contents) "Internal Storage\TomTom Install\zip" to "My Device\Program Files\Navigator". This zip folder contains two files: one has a .postal file extension and the other a .ver file extension. Once the folder was copied over, the full postcode search worked like a charm!

That's it! It all works now. There is one more step though to clear up valuable storage space on the HTC...

Step 9 (optional but worth it)

The "Internal Storage\TomTom Install" folder shouldn't be needed any more. Remember that this is just a copy of the Mini SD card that came in the box. I deleted this from my HTC (using File Explorer). Also, in step 7 I copied ALL the voices, including languages from countries all over the world, to my HTC. I only want one voice so, using TomTom home on my PC, with the HTC connected to the PC of course, I removed the voices I didn't want.
